President’s Letter

Members and Friends,

Days are getting longer—with welcome hints of spring, and plans are underway for a Rose Society season filled with our favorite flowers and friends like you! Our exciting events for 2024 start soon, thanks to our donors, members and sponsors whose enthusi- asm and generous support make it happen!

We’re looking forward to April 20th when Peter Bertrand’s yearly Pruning & Planting Workshop kicks off the season. The event is an education for veteran rose gardeners and beginners alike. Peter takes the mystery out of planting bare root roses, and he’ll share tips to make sure you succeed! The session starts at 10:00 am in our rose garden at the Rogers Memorial Library.

Peter makes it easy for young gardeners too! On May 3, from 4-6 pm, he will conduct his yearly Children’s Mini Rose and Art Workshop at the library. This event keeps growing more popular with children and their parents.

Then, our biggest event will be on the horizon! The 47th annual SRS Rose Show at the Rogers Library will be held on Saturday, June 15. Please save the date!Last year’s show had a record turnout of entrees and visitors, due to the prodigious efforts of SRS Rose Show Chair Valerie Hanley and her volunteers. Many thanks also go to the generosity of Peter Marino, Pamela Nigro and John Kern for donating new sterling silver trophies for entrants to win in the years to come. All told, there’s a judging class for nearly every rose grower now, from beginners to experts, so I hope you’ll come and join the fun.

That same day is Rose Day in the Village of Southampton, led by Selena May and Lisa Vahradian. Shops in the Village are encouraged to decorate their windows in a rose display competition. It’s the official day to celebrate roses, the official flower of Southampton.

The SRS Cocktail Party Fundraiser will be held Friday, August 9th at a beautiful estate in Southampton Village. Please save the date!
